Day three: Interviews

Objective

  • Students will be able to comprehend the content of a Mock Interview between Teacher and a famous personality from the target culture.
  • Students will be able to conduct a mock interview of a famous personality within a Three-Step Interview format.

Setting the Stage (5 minutes)

Teacher shows a series of large photos or illustrations of famous personalities-actors, politicians, historical figures, artists, musicians, singers, etc from the target culture. Teacher introduces each one and says a few words about each personality.

Teacher asks class which of these personalities they would like to "interview" as a group.

Input and Guided Practice (20 minutes)

Teacher conducts a mock interview with a personality he or she has chosen. Teacher asks many who-what-when-where-why-how-how many questions of the famous personality. Teacher asks volunteer students for sample responses to the questions. Class chooses which responses they prefer. Teacher reinforces student comprehension by reiterating who-what-when-where-why-how-how many about the answers they've chosen. This process is called "circling" in the Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) method.

EXAMPLE: (Teacher displays the questions in the front of the room.)

  2. How old were you when you decided to become a…?
  3. What type of training or education did you get to prepare yourself as a …?
  4. How long have you worked as a …?
  5. Why did you choose… as a career?
  6. Who has influenced you the most in your career?
  7. What do you like the most about your career?
  8. What do you not like about your career?
  9. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to become a … like you?
  10. Tell us about some of your successes as a …?
  11. Tell us about one of your failures as a …?
  12. Overall, how would you rate your work as a …?

Independent Practice (20 minutes)

Teacher asks students to get into groups of four. Teacher hands each member of the group a card. Card has one big letter written on it, either A, B, C or D.

Teacher has written on board the following description of the Three-Step Interview process:

  • STEP ONE:
    • Student A interviews Student B.
    • Student C interviews Student D.
  • STEP TWO:
    • Student B interviews Student A.
    • Student D interviews Student C.
  • STEP THREE:
    • A reports to C and D about B.
    • B reports to C and D about A.
    • C reports to A and B about D.
    • D reports to A and B about D.

Teacher instructs all students to role-play one of their own favorite famous personalities (from the students' culture) and ask or respond to the questions posted in front of the room.

Closure (5 minutes)

Teacher leads discussion of students' reactions to the lesson.
