Unit 17: On the air!

Cultural values, current events, target-language news broadcasts; conducting and comprehending oral interviews; review of news vocabulary, commands, expressing feelings and opinions, providing and obtaining information orally; target-language web and print media research. The unit lasts for 8-10 days.

Objectives

  • Make connections between skills they are learning and current social issues

Meeting the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools

  1. Content Stage III:
    • Students acquire information, recognize viewpoints.
    • Students address concrete and factual topics, including social norms, community issues, environmental concerns, media, internet, television, radio, film, effects of technology in the modern world.
  2. Communication Stage III:
    • Students use planned language (paragraphs and strings of paragraphs.)
    • Students engage in oral conversations, present to an audience of listeners or viewers.
  3. Functions Stage III:
    • Students state and explain an opinion.
    • Students demonstrate understanding of main ideas and key details.
    • Students produce an oral product in a culturally authentic way.
  4. Cultures Stage III:
    • Students determine appropriate responses to situations with complications.
    • Students describe similarities and differences within the target cultures and among students' own cultures.
  5. Structures Stage III:
    • Students use paragraph-level discourse (text structure) to produce formal communications.
  6. Settings Stage III:
    • Students use language in informal and some formal settings.
