Unit 13: Fashion show

Day Four: Gallery walk

Objective

Students will be able to describe items of clothing worn to special events, such as:

  • a concert
  • a play
  • a formal occasion
  • a sporting event
  • an excursion with friends
  • dinner in a restaurant
  • a date at the movies
  • traveling
  • visiting relatives

Setting the Stage (5 minutes)

Teacher calls attention to the displays tacked to bulletin boards, taped to walls, etc. The students see a variety of magazine pages (at least 15) that illustrate people in various types of clothing that might be appropriate to the special events listed above.

Input (30 minutes)

Teacher has prepared a set of large flashcards ahead of time for each of these special events, with both the Target Language and the English term for each event.

Teacher walks around the classroom and describes each event. Teacher holds up the appropriate flashcard to assure student comprehension. Teacher asks comprehension questions (yes/no, either/or, who-what-when-where-why) related to the event and the items of clothing depicted in the picture. For example, (translate into the target language):

  • Is the man going to the movies?
  • Does the woman like being with the man at the movies?
  • What are the man and woman talking about?
  • What is the name of the movie?
  • Where did the man buy his clothes?
  • What favorite thing is the lady wearing?
  • What time of day (when) is the couple together?
  • Does the woman prefer wearing earrings, a necklace or a bracelet?
  • What did the man or woman do to prepare for this date? Did he or she shower or take a bath? What time of day did he or she do this---in the morning or before going out?

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Students, in pairs, create a short story of an ideal date. Teacher provides the Guided Writing form (translated into the Target Language) for this project.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

Students, in pairs, walk around the room and describe to each other whatever they can about the pictures on the wall that Teacher had described earlier.

Closure (2-3 minutes)

Student pairs brainstorm about their own favorite excursion.
